With a resurgence of intercommunal conflict, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has reinforced the presence of its peacekeepers in Tambura, Western Equatoria to protect hundreds of displaced persons.
In 2021, tensions erupted in Tambura that resulted in tens of thousands being displaced, while many others lost their lives.
In past weeks, women, children, and the elderly have fled their homes with only a few meager belongings seeking shelter adjacent to an UNMISS temporary base in Tambura. Peacekeepers have been on the ground, reducing tensions and doing everything they can to help ease their suffering.

The resurgence of conflict has led to despair among many of the newly displaced.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Lucia Alfred, Displaced Person, Tambura:
“Our hearts as mothers, we want to stay with our children, and want them to be able to study like others in this world. Tambura is finished. Even to get a bucket of water is not easy.”
Though the situation seems hopeless, they are grateful to UNMISS peacekeepers.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Gloria Dario, Displaced Person, Tambura:
