Storyline

Heavy rains and floods have claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed thousands of homes in northeastern Afghanistan.
Heavy rains on 10 and 11 May led to flash floods in northeastern Afghanistan, resulting in 180 fatalities, over 240 injuries, and destroying nearly 9,000 homes, leaving thousands without shelter, damaging local roads, bridges, schools, and health facilities across Baghlan, Badakhsan, and Takhar provinces.
Heavy rains 17 and 18 May in Faryab and Ghor provinces (northern and western regions) left at least 134 dead, hundreds missing, and thousands losing homes and livelihoods. More than half of the people affected are women and children.
The latest crisis exacerbates the already large humanitarian challenges Afghanistan faces. Currently, 23 million people need humanitarian assistance, including 15.8 million facing food insecurity. These issues are compounded by an economic crisis and weak governance institutions. Ranked among the top six most climate-impacted countries globally, Afghanistan confronts severe climate change effects.

Recurrent droughts, floods, and earthquakes worsen the situation, severely impacting communities and straining the already limited availability of resources.
The affected areas require significant support, from emergency shelter, essential supplies, such as food, clean water, medical assistance, debris clearing, rehabilitation of critical community infrastructure and restoring income and livelihoods.
