Storyline

At the Global Business Network Forum today (26 May) in Antigua, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said a sustained commitment was needed from the international community to shore up vulnerable island nations “and public money will not be enough.”

Guterres arrived today in Antigua for a three-day visit on the occasion of the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4), held from 27 to 30 May 2024 in St John’s.

Ahead of SIDS4, the Global Business Network Forum connected the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) private sector for impactful partnerships, ensuring their voices are heard globally.

This year, the forum explored themes like blue-green growth, community empowerment, and investment opportunities.

Addressing the Forum, in his first major speech since arriving, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that multistakeholder partnerships, including with the private sector, will be essential.

He said, “The financing challenges faced by SIDS go far beyond this group of countries. They are symptomatic of financial turmoil in the developing world. The global financial system is outdated, dysfunctional and unjust.”

According to Guterres, financing renewable energy, sustainable tourism and climate resilience will have to include private sector funds, expertise and innovation, and governments must take the lead with regulations and policy through strong and accountable public institutions, with development banks mobilizing private funds at reasonable cost.

He stressed, "We must ensure that all countries and communities have access to both the finance and the technologies needed to transform their energy, food and digital systems."

Guterres also expressed deep solidarity to the people and the Government of Papua New Guinea and send his condolences to the victims of the devastating landslides in the country.
