“The Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS provides concrete guidance to our collective efforts to support SIDS achieve resilient prosperity. The Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS presents a vision for the future SIDS want and need: Where SIDS’ economies develop the resilience that will allow them to withstand shocks. Where their populations continue to enjoy the uniqueness of island life and are safe, productive and prosperous, but also where access to food, energy and water is guaranteed. Where biodiversity is protected, the ocean and its resources are conserved and action on climate change meets the urgency of the moment.”

“It is so truly inspiring to be here to hear about the SIDS Centre of Excellence, to hear about the Global Data hubs. So finally, data will be able to be used by all Small Island Development States. Data is a human right. There is no way that we can grow if we don’t collaborate with each other. So, yes, I am filled with hope after this conference.”

As the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) wrapped up today (30 May) in Antigua, UN deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohamed said, “The Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS presents a vision for the future SIDS want and need.”
She added, “Where SIDS’ economies are resilient and able to withstand shocks. Where their populations are safe, healthy, productive and prosperous, and access to food, energy and water is secure. Where biodiversity is protected, the ocean and its resources are conserved and action on climate change meets the urgency of the moment.”
The ABAS, a new roadmap towards achieving resilient prosperity for small island States, was officially adopted on Thursday in Antigua and Barbuda.
While expressing hope, Mohammed mentioned that the UN is committed to help implement the agreement.
She said, “On the ground, our Resident Coordinators and the UN Country teams will be working hand in hand with all partners to support SIDS in their transitions to digital green, blue – I hear even turquoise – that deliver resilient prosperity and sustainable development for the populations of the SIDS.”
Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbados, Gaston Browne, in his capacity as President of the Conference said, “We’ve witnessed incredible collaboration, cooperation and shared innovative ideas, as we forge new paths to achieve sustainable development. Today, we are not just concluding a conference, we are celebrating a new beginning for a brighter future for SIDS.”
Speaking at the closing, Cabo Verde delegation offered to host next SIDS5 Conference in 2034.
