8. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
“Consultations continue. As you know, I've been in Kaliningrad just a few days ago, continuing my consultations and I will of course this week, be meeting with the Minister of Energy of Ukraine. And we will continue this very important work on another serious situation there.”

UN Atomic Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi today (3 Jun) told the annual Board of Governors meeting in Vienna that “for the first time in a long time,” during the reporting period, there had been “direct attacks” aimed at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Ukraine, which he said is “of extreme gravity.”
Grossi said, "this highlights the precarious and very fragile situation around the plant,” noting that the IAEA Support and Assistance Mission (ISAM) continues, and needs “to continue the engagement at technical level to make sure that no nuclear accident with radiological consequences takes place there.”
The IAEA Chief, who visited Kaliningrad last week, said he will be continuing consultations and will meet Ukraine’s Minister of Energy German Galushchenko.

In his written statement, Grossi explained that “Zaporizhzhya NPP suffered direct attacks for the first time in almost one and a half years. These attacks violated the first of the five concrete principles for protecting the Zaporizhzhya NPP that I laid out to the Board for the first time one year ago. The attacks and the frequent disconnection of the off-site power lines due to military activity are creating a grave situation.”
The IAEA Board of Governors is one of the two policy-making bodies of the IAEA, along with the annual General Conference of IAEA Member States.
The Board examines and makes recommendations to the General Conference on the IAEA's financial statements, programme and budget. It considers applications for membership, approves safeguards agreements and the publication of the IAEA's safety standards. It also appoints the Director General of the IAEA, with the approval of the General Conference.
The Board generally meets five times per year: in March and June, twice in September (before and after the General Conference) and in November.
