1. Various shots, exteriors, Kuala Lumpur 03/06/23
2. Various shots, meeting with Myanmar refugees, and with Myanmar refugee representatives
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights:
“I've just met with representatives of all the different ethnic groups from Myanmar who are now represented here in Malaysia, and I was really encouraged because first of all, they really come together as a group. They show solidarity among themselves. This is not what I was used to in the past. It shows that there is a new vision of Myanmar emerging among the communities. It's grassroots, it’s community-led, and that's very encouraging. Of course, they are facing a lot of problems, and they are suffering because they are in exile. They had to flee their country. They had a lot of hopes that were dashed because of the military takeover on February 21st. The only thing we can do is to support them, but also to help them with this vision that is emerging about the future of the country.”
4. Wide shot, HC meeting with internally displaced people’s representatives from Myanmar
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Türk UN High Commissioner for Human Rights:
“ASEAN plays a very important role when it comes to Myanmar. It's one of their member states. But it is absolutely critical that there is solidarity with the people, with what's going on inside the country and that member states of ASEAN make sure that the five-point consensus is actually implemented. At the moment, it's not. There are people who are fleeing every day because of what's happening inside Myanmar. They need protection. They need assistance. They need solidarity. And they need open hearts and minds, including by societies here in Malaysia, in Thailand, in Indonesia, and elsewhere. And it's really important that countries show that solidarity with the people of Myanmar who are going through an atrocious time.”

Storyline

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Tuesday (4 Jun) wrapped up an official mission to Malaysia.

He met with representatives of refugees from Myanmar from different ethnic groups.

They had to flee their countries. They had a lot of hopes that were dashed because of the military takeover on February 21st. The only thing we can do is to support them, but also to help them with this vision that is emerging about the future of the country,” he stated.

With Malaysia poised to take the ASEAN Chairmanship next year, the High Commissioner looked to its leadership to strengthen ASEAN’s human rights agenda and to inject renewed vigor into the international response to crises like the catastrophic situation in Myanmar.

And they need open hearts and minds, including by societies here in Malaysia, in Thailand, in in Indonesia and elsewhere. And it's really important that countries show that solidarity with the people of Myanmar who are going through an atrocious time,” Türk stressed.

Malaysia has made clear its strong opposition to the military coup that took place in February 21, and it is hosting refugees from Myanmar, including Rohingya.

The High Commissioner also met with Myanmar civil society in Bangkok, where he has stopped over for two days before going to Laos for an official visit.

Laos is the current ASEAN chair.
