2.SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sebit Manoli-Director of Sports-State Ministry of Youth and Sports:
“Sport is very important because it plays a role in uniting our youth. This is needed because some of them have lately become distracted and engaged in bad things like alcohol, drugs abuse and sexual violence. At our ministry, we think that we can change the ways of our youth through sport.

Storyline

Thousands of Raja residents recently gathered at the town’s football stadium to attend a two-day peace tournament organized by the Western Bahr El Ghazal’s State Ministry of Youth and Sport with support from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The theme of the event was “Fit for the future, building better together.”

Raja, located in the northwest of the world’s youngest country, has experienced tensions in recent years, leading to intercommunal violence. For this reason, local authorities have called on their partners, including the UN, to support the promotion of peace and unity among the eight different ethnic groups living in the area.

In continuous bids to play its part in promoting peace, UNMISS has often organized outreach and advocacy events to bring the diverse local population together.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sebit Manoli-Director of Sports-State Ministry of Youth and Sports:
“Sport is very important because it plays a role in uniting our youth. This is needed because some of them have lately become distracted and engaged in bad things like alcohol, drugs abuse and sexual violence. At our ministry, we think that we can change the ways of our youth through sport.

The UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan shares the belief that sports, and other pleasurable, communal activities, are important to improve relations between young people – primarily men – from different ethnic backgrounds.

SOUNDBITE (English) Sam Muhumure, Head of the UNMISS Field Office in Wau:
“Young people have a lot of energy and therefore, if they don’t have an opportunity to shed off that energy in an entertaining and exercising way, it becomes difficult for them to be at peace with each other. So, this activity helps to bring that element of social coherence within this community.”

It is hoped that this football tournament will not only strengthen intercommunal relations but also create a platform for direct conversation between the government and its citizens ahead of elections scheduled to take place in December.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Franco Massimino, Salama FC:
“As you can see from today's football game, whenever there is a match in Raja, many people come together, including those who have travelled from other places like Sudan and Wau. They come to watch as a means of promoting peace and unity."

In Raja, players from all teams seem to agree with the idea that sports can bring peace.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Michael Karama Tom, Elephant FC:
"Football in Raja is highly important. As you can see today, without football, this nation would not progress. In any country, there must be sporting activities to foster community and national development."

UNMISS will continue to support peace-promoting activities and initiatives across South Sudan, sports included.
