Storyline

Across South Sudan, people are suffering immense hardship as inflation skyrockets and jobs are harder to come by than ever. The dire situation is fueling crime, putting pressure on resource-starved police officers, who are facing increasing insecurity while going months without pay.

SOUNDBITE (English) Samuel Nai, newly graduated South Sudan National Police Officer:
“This police work is very tiresome. It is very challenging, but the experience here we gained will help us to do better in the future. This is the transformation we want from the police.”

Samuel Nai just graduated as a police officer. He is one of 30 colleagues who were trained in basic tactics and techniques by police officers serving with the UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

SOUNDBITE (English) Moses Mobil, Second Lieutenant in the South Sudan National Police Service:
“They taught us some other things like how to protect civilians, how to go and get suspects to go easily, how to handle, how to take care of a suspect also if you are captured, how to carry out further investigation. “

The hands-on training covered the appropriate use of force, safely searching suspects, unarmed defense, first aid, VIP protection, vehicle convoy safety, community patrolling and conducting investigations. These skills will be critical ahead of the country’s first post-independence elections.

SOUNDBITE (English) Sophia Ennim, UNPOL Officer,UNMISS:
“We want to share experiences with them. We also want their experiences to be shared with us. And again, we know they are preparing towards elections and we thought this time would be best for them to refresh their policing tactics and techniques.”

These officers provide an important link between the authorities and local communities. Among them is lilian poni, a pioneer among women in the south sudanese police, having served for 19 years. She is calling for more women to have the same opportunity to further develop their careers.

SOUNDBITE (English): Lilian Poni, South Sudan Police Officer
“As I sit here, the males are many but females are not many. So at least they have to make gender balance, if the men are 10, women have to be 10 also.”

The ultimate aim is to build the capacity of South Sudanese police officers to meet the needs of their communities.

SOUNDBITE (English) Yusuf Masinja UNPOL Officer, UNMISS
“We are not going to be here permanently so that at the time we are leaving and handing over these things, they should be able to handle these situations themselves and they should be able to go out there and assist people in need.”

This training will be followed by a session on public order management to help ensure that elections are conducted in a free, fair, credible and peaceful manner.
