“Looking at artificial intelligence, more from the perspective of the connection between AI and development and looking in particular at, on the downside, the negative risks of greater inequality and a greater gap between rich and poor. And on the positive side, the way in which AI can contribute in terms of data collection and in terms of moving forward on getting better access to information so that information can be more widely shared as we attempt to improve our performance on the SDGs.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Keith Rae, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC):
“This is going to be a year in which financing for development issues will become crucial and will remain crucial. So, it's important for us to work with all of the co-facilitators who are working on the build up to the meetings, in Spain in 2025 and for the Social Summit, which will take place in the next term, but also for us to be looking at how to improve the dialog, the working dialog between the and between ECOSOC, the members of the General Assembly, and the international financial institutions.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Keith Rae, President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC):
“When you look at the draft, much of it, most of it turns on ECOSOC. When you look at what are our responsibilities on financing for development, what our responsibilities on climate change. You go down the list of things you look at in the document. You'll see these are all things that ECOSOC needs to talk about, needs to be engaged with.”

Storyline

The newly elected President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Ambassador Robert Keith Rae today (26 Jul) told journalists in New York that population displacement is “creating enormous challenges for the world and is something that we increasingly have to see as a as an issue for the Council.”

Rae, who is the Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations, said “because of conflict and now increasingly because of climate change, more and more people are being forced to leave their homes, either for other places in their own countries or around the world.”
Turning to artificial intelligence, he said it should be looked at “from the perspective of the connection between AI and development and looking in particular at, on the downside, the negative risks of greater inequality and a greater gap between rich and poor. And on the positive side, the way in which AI can contribute in terms of data collection and in terms of moving forward on getting better access to information so that information can be more widely shared as we attempt to improve our performance on the SDGs.”

Rae said, “this is going to be a year in which financing for development issues will become crucial and will remain crucial.

Asked about the upcoming Summit of the Future, he said, “when you look at the draft, much of it, most of it turns on ECOSOC. When you look at what are our responsibilities on financing for development, what our responsibilities on climate change. You go down the list of things you look at in the document. You'll see these are all things that ECOSOC needs to talk about, needs to be engaged with.”

The Summit of the Future will take place in New York from the 20 to 23 September.
