4. SOUNDBITE (English) Chitose Noguchi, Director, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Office in Gaza:
“As UNDP, we have been working very closely with the Joint Services Council to move the waste that is close to people who are living there and also to the shops where people are walking by, to areas that are safer. We are monitoring the fuel also for the collection of waste, through these trucks that are being, transporting the waste. We are having a very strong system for monitoring the use of the fuel so that it's only used for transporting the waste. We are working also closely with the Minister of health and with the WHO on medical waste treatment. We know that a lot of the medical waste is being dumped in the same areas as normal waste. This should not be the case. It should be separated. So, we used to have as UNDP a medical waste management system that we were working with closely with the Ministry of Health, with the Joint Services Council. And we want to revive that or restore that system, including also the segregation of the waste and then treatment in the right location. So, our strategy, as UNDP, has been to work very closely with the local partners, with the Joint Services Council, with the private sector, with the relevant UN agencies, so that we are able to restore the solid waste management system for Gaza. What else? Right now, in Gaza, there is a public health crisis. There's not enough, clean water and hygiene facilities to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. So, there are over a million people who are sick. They have a skin diseases; they're suffering from diarrhoea. Now there's polio. So, this is a very urgent crisis. And we are responding as UNDP, an emergency response so that we can address the issue in a holistic manner.”

Storyline

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is collaborating with UN partners and local Palestinian organizations in managing solid waste and relocating it to safer areas, away from displaced persons' camps and densely populated areas in Gaza, as the spread of infectious diseases increases.

This is crucial to ensuring a healthier environment for Palestinians.

The Director of UNDP’s Office in Gaza, Chitose Noguchi, said the agency is “working very closely with the Joint Services Council to move the waste that is close to people who are living there and also to the shops where people are walking by, to areas that are safer.”

Noguchi said, “we are monitoring the fuel also for the collection of waste, through these trucks that are being, transporting the waste. We are having a very strong system for monitoring the use of the fuel so that it's only used for transporting the waste. We are working also closely with the Minister of health and with the WHO on medical waste treatment. We know that a lot of the medical waste is being dumped in the same areas as normal waste. This should not be the case. It should be separated.”

She said, “we used to have as UNDP a medical waste management system that we were working with closely with the Ministry of Health, with the Joint Services Council. And we want to revive that or restore that system, including also the segregation of the waste and then treatment in the right location.”

The UNDP official said, “right now, in Gaza, there is a public health crisis.

According to UNDP, over one million Palestinians are suffering from contagious skin diseases, in addition to the recent emergence of polio.
