1. Wide shot, children, tents, displacement camp
2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Niveen Abu Al-Jidyan, internally displaced person, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan’s mother:
"The doctor who was following the case and who took the samples to Jordan informed us. After they knew that Abdul Rahman had polio, I went to Al-Aqsa Hospital and the doctors told me that they knew that the child had polio and that there was no treatment or possibility of treatment. My son will remain like this, and I do not know what to do. I cannot even provide the tonics as I used to before. He needs filtered water constantly. I have a family with me and my situation does not allow me to buy mineral water for him constantly."
3. Med shot, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan
4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Niveen Abu Al-Jidyan, internally displaced person, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan’s mother:
"As you can see, life here is completely unhealthy. Neither food nor water, and this has affected the child who was suffering from weak immunity."
5. Close up, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan
6. UPSOUND (Arabic) Niveen Abu Al-Jidyan, internally displaced person, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan’s mother:
"The virus was strong on him. He did not receive vaccinations due to the continuous displacement. When we were displaced from the north, he was a month old. He was supposed to receive the injection when the displacement occurred. And we kept moving from one place to another. This constituted an obstacle (to obtain vaccinations)."
7. Various shots, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan, children, family
8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Niveen Abu Al-Jidyan, internally displaced person, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan’s mother:
"When they discovered his illness, the reason was that the child did not receive vaccinations and the poor living conditions, lack of hygiene and malnutrition, which were the cause of his infection."
9. Various shots, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan, children
10. UPSOUND (Arabic) Niveen Abu Al-Jidyan, internally displaced person, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan’s mother:
“We would like to go abroad for treatment when the crossing is opened. The doctor who is following up on the case contacts me and tells me that anyone who can help us get him out can contact me. But so far, no one has provided us with anything, not even supplements. He is now feeding on the regular supplements that a normal child takes, which can strengthen his muscles and legs, but the child's condition is not improving, but rather deteriorating.”
11. Med shot, child
12. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Niveen Abu Al-Jidyan, internally displaced person, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan’s mother:
"I wish my child would return to how he was and be able to move, but I can't do anything to help him. After they knew that he was infected with the polio virus, they said, 'Stay in your tent until we know what we can do or get him out (of the strip).'"
13. Various shots, children, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan, Niveen Abu Al-Jidyan
14. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Niveen Abu Al-Jidyan, internally displaced person, Abdul Rahman Abu Al-Jidyan’s mother:
“I am the mother of the child Abdul Rahman. My son had vomiting and fever. I took him to Al-Aqsa Hospital and did not expect it to be anything serious. The child was sleeping all the time and was not waking up or breastfeeding for two weeks until they suspected that he might be infected with the disease, so a sample was taken from him and sent to Jordan. After two weeks of illness, they told me that he had polio. It was a great shock to me, my children, and their father. We wondered why this only child was infected, how he was infected, and where the disease came from. I was surprised. They told us that he was infected through contaminated water because the living conditions are not healthy. My child was in good health and was moving, and suddenly his condition deteriorated. I hope that my child will return to how he was, and I hope that his health will return to him, either by taking him abroad or by providing him with treatment here. Or any way so that he can regain his health as before. My son is here, and no one asks about him and there is no treatment available for him, and as a mother, I cannot help him with anything. Even the supplements he takes are supplements given to any normal child, whether calcium or vitamins, and they did not help him at all."

Storyline

“My son will remain like this, and I do not know what to do,” said the mother of the 10-month-old unvaccinated child from Deir al-Balah confirmed to have polio — the first case in Gaza in 25 years.

The family has been displaced for 11 months from the Jabalia refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip and is currently settled in the camps for displaced people west of Deir al-Balah.

World Health Organization (WHO) and partners urgently worked to collect and transfer stool samples from the child for testing at a WHO-accredited laboratory in the region.

Genomic sequencing confirmed the virus is linked to the variant poliovirus type 2 detected in environmental samples collected in June from Gaza's wastewater.

According to WHO, the child, who developed paralysis in the lower left leg, is currently in a stable condition.

Given the high risk of poliovirus spread in Gaza and the region, the Palestinian Ministry of Health, WHO and UNICEF are working to implement two rounds of polio vaccination in the coming weeks to halt transmission.
