“In response to this virus, it is important that we come to know in Gaza where all the transmission of polio virus may be happening in the community or whether the transmission has stopped. And the best way to do that is relying on our gold standard acute flacid paralysis (AFP) surveillance system.”

“The current context of Gaza, resulting in overcrowding, poor sanitation and hygiene conditions, and regular population displacement, makes it a very favourable ground for continued spread of polio virus. One of the characteristics of the variant cVDPV type 2 (variant Poliovirus type two) outbreak that we are dealing is that it spreads very rapidly.”

“I took him to Al-Aqsa Hospital (Shuhada Al-Aqsa Hospital), and they had him on antibiotics and solutions for two weeks. After two weeks they took a sample from him and sent it to Jordan, because doctors have suspected that he might have polio.”

“I was surprised by a phone call from the Ministry of Health to inform me that Abdulrahman is the only case to test positive for this disease.”

“He’s not able to stand still, or crawl like he used to do before; my son was able to crawl all around the place. He is almost a year old now, and basically all babies should walk when they are one year old, but not Abdulrahamn, not anymore, he used to walk, crawl but not anymore.”

“I basically do the following, I put him to sleep, I breastfeed him, and I put him back in his baby seat. I also cool his back, as he is always sleeping on it, it makes him feel hot, and I don’t want the heat to cause him a disease, so I move, I flip/move him from side to side.”

“I feel sad, I actually don’t know how to describe how I am feeling; my only son getting this disease, with no available treatment and the boarders are closed, war is going on, and our situation is tough, the place where are here at is unclean, the tent is unclean, even water is not clean, all of these circumstances are not good for him, and I can’t handle it nor am able to deal with it.”

“When Abdulrahman was one month old, we were displaced from the north to south, from a place to a place, from Rafah to Deir Al-Wusta. From a tent to another tent, and this resulted in Abdulrahman not getting his vaccinations. And of course, due to the fact that he was not vaccinated he ended up getting infected with this virus.”

A 10-month-old unvaccinated child from Deir al-Balah, Gaza, has been confirmed to have polio— the first case in Gaza in 25 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners are working to implement two rounds of polio vaccination in the coming weeks to halt transmission. As part of preparations for the upcoming polio campaign WHO is training 2,180 health workers on polio vaccination.
