5. SOUNDBITE (English) Akihiro Saita. director of health, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA):
“We routinely, we regularly check the sewages in all the countries in the world to make sure that there is no poliovirus. And then we did it in Gaza and we checked the sewages in the laboratory designated by WHO and we found that there are poliovirus type 2 from the polio vaccine. And because of this, we need to vaccinate all the children less than 10 years in Gaza and we unfortunately had one case of polio recently. And to address this polio campaign, WHO, World Health Organization, and the UNICEF brought 1.2 million doses of polio type 2 vaccine to Gaza recently.”

“With the virus spreading in these conditions, the lack of cleaning supplies, overcrowding, and the spread of sewage water, we decided that our children must be vaccinated to protect them.”

Storyline

Efforts by UN organizations to vaccinate against polio persist in the central areas of the Gaza Strip.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that, in collaboration with its partner UN organizations, it succeeded in vaccinating 87,000 children on the first day of the campaign, which is set to continue for several days.

In a statement, UNRWA emphasized that while efforts to administer this essential vaccine to children are ongoing, what is urgently needed now is a ceasefire.

The vaccination campaign aims to reach more than 600,000 children in the coming days.
