“We come together today to sound the call for peace. Here at the United Nations, peace is our raison d'être, our guiding light, and our founding creed. Yet peace is under threat. War is on the march. From the Middle East, to Sudan, Ukraine, and beyond, we see bullets and bombs maim and kill; bodies piled high; populations traumatised; and buildings reduced to rubble.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“International institutions must be better positioned to respond. And we have a chance for change. Later this month, at the Summit of the Future, we can begin the process of reform and revitalisation by adapting multilateral institutions to today’s reality, instead of the reality of the Second World War.”

Secretary-General António Guterres rang the Peace Bell today (13 Sep) at United Nations Headquarters, and said “peace is our raison d'être, our guiding light, and our founding creed.” But he warned that peace is under threat, with wars in the Middle East, Sudan, Ukraine and beyond, while geo-political divisions are widening, and inequalities are growing.
Guterres said, “war is on the march. From the Middle East, to Sudan, Ukraine, and beyond, we see bullets and bombs maim and kill; bodies piled high; populations traumatised; and buildings reduced to rubble.”
Later this month, he said, at the Summit of the Future, “we can begin the process of reform and of revitalization by adapting multilateral institutions to today’s reality, instead of the reality of the Second World War.”
The Peace Bell was cast in the 1950s from coins and medals donated by people all over the world, including the Pope, as a symbol of hope for peace.
The Bell is rung twice a year: on the first day of spring, at the Vernal Equinox, and to commemorate the International Day for Peace.
