Storyline

Since late August, severe flash floods and monsoons plaguing Bangladesh have affected up to six million people. Bangladeshi officials have declared the floods to be the country's worst climate disaster in recent history.

Eastern parts of Bangladesh and the adjacent Indian states of Meghalaya and Tripura faced substantial rainfall caused by active monsoons and low pressure over the Bay of Bengal since 21 August 2024.

Huge number of populations have been forced to evacuate, leading to temporary displacement. A lot of people took shelter on the road and embankment.

Roads, bridges, house buildings, and utilities have been damaged and destroyed. Standing field crops, homestead crops, aquaculture-based crops have been submerged and some are washed out which leading to food shortages and economic losses.

Over 18 million people have been affected by these severe monsoon conditions over the year, with more than 1.2 million families trapped as flash floods submerge vast areas of the country’s east and southeast.

UNDP is coordinating a response in conjunction with Professor Yunus’ interim government.
