UN Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs Felipe Paullier said, “Although young people remain the generation with the most confidence in the multilateral system, we run the risk of losing them as partners if we don’t make this pact a reality.”

At the opening session of the Summit of the Future Action Days today (20 Sep), Paullier said, “Excuses for not putting an end to the climate tragedy, wars, forced displacement, and ultimately, the loss of generations are running out. If we are gathered here —young people from all over the world, heads of state, representatives from civil society, ministers, ambassadors, academia, the public and private sectors—it is precisely to break this trend and take action.”

He continued, “On Sunday, the Future Summit will begin, and I have hope and confidence that these Action Days will foster the positive transformation we need. That is the intention of these two days we are starting.”

Also at the opening, José Maria Pereira Neves, President of the Republic of Cabo Verde said, “The youth are at the forefront of our objectives and must be an integral part of the solutions we pursue – as driving forces for leadership, change and action. The opening session aimed to ignite inspiration and action to advance meaningful youth participation in the UN and beyond – as an issue relevant and important to all sectors and actors.

Through keynote speeches from diverse set of representatives, speakers highlighted the role of young people in driving positive change across sectors and broader society.
