3. SOUNDBITE (English) Caleb Brathwaite, President of the Barbados Youth Development Council (BYDC):
“We must hold our governments accountable. We must keep our governments fit to be fair to ensure that that part of the future in relation to Chapter Four is really actualized and realized for young people around the world. That is how we would turn this mere agreement Chapter Four part for the future into action.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Daphne Frias, Youth Activist, Organizer, Storyteller:
“Truly, it's time for the people who do so much of the talking, to do less of the talking, and for the people who don't get to do as much of that talking, to take center stage and to have the voices of my generation - the generation that has fueled the Summit of the Future, that has fueled the UN youth office to lead.”
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Josefa Tauli, Policy Co-coordinator of the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN):
“And I really say this also as an indigenous young woman who is constantly being shaped and molded by the young people, the indigenous people that I interact with every day at home and in the work that I do. These are people who really continue to be caring, caring for each other, caring for the land, caring for nature and remain compassionate and kind even as they fight a system that is harming them and oppressing them and even killing them. So unless our institutions and processes are being led by them, then we would be failing at what we need to do really. And just to add, I think what we need then is a shift really, a shift in who holds power and space to speak and to lead, a shift in who gets resources, a shift in whose expertise we are listening to and whose values are guiding decision making.”
7. Various shots, General Assembly Hall
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Amani Joel Mafigi, Co-Founder UNLEASHED (Potentials in Motion)
“When youth are empowered, trusted and funded, major breakthroughs that will shape our world to solve the challenges of today and the challenges of tomorrow, is a guarantee.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“One of the key reforms that needs to be done, that need to be implemented at all levels is to free the young people, to let young people strive, to let the potential of young people be multiplied.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations
“I encourage young people not to be afraid to fight for the rights.”

Storyline

In an interactive dialogue today (20 Sep), youth advocates and the Secretary-General António Guterres, unpacked what the implementation of Chapter 4 of the Pact for the Future means in practice.

The interactive dialogue is part of the first day of the Action Days, gaining momentum for the Summit of the Future.

Caleb Brathwaite, President of the Barbados Youth Development Council said, “We must hold our governments accountable. We must keep our governments fit to be fair to ensure that that part of the future in relation to Chapter Four is really actualized and realized for young people around the world. That is how we would turn this mere agreement Chapter Four part for the future into action.”
For her part, Youth Activist Daphne Frias said, “Truly, it's time for the people who do so much of the talking, to do less of the talking, and for the people who don't get to do as much of that talking, to take center stage and to have the voices of my generation - the generation that has fueled the Summit of the Future, that has fueled the UN youth office to lead.”

As an indigenous young woman, Josefa Tauli said she is “constantly being shaped and molded by the young people, the indigenous people that I interact with every day at home and in the work that I do.”

“These are people who really continue to be caring, caring for each other, caring for the land, caring for nature and remain compassionate and kind even as they fight a system that is harming them and oppressing them and even killing them,” Tauli added.

She continued, “unless our institutions and processes are being led by them, then we would be failing at what we need to do really.”

Tauli said, “what we need then is a shift really, a shift in who holds power and space to speak and to lead, a shift in who gets resources, a shift in whose expertise we are listening to and whose values are guiding decision making.”

Amani Joel Mafigi, was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but later sought refuge in Uganda due to insecurity.

He said, “When youth are empowered, trusted and funded, major breakthroughs that will shape our world to solve the challenges of today and the challenges of tomorrow, is a guarantee.”

Taking part in the frank conversation with the youth advocates, Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated, “One of the key reforms that needs to be done, that need to be implemented at all levels is to free the young people, to let young people strive, to let the potential of young people be multiplied.”

He concluded by encouraging young people “not to be afraid to fight for the rights.”
