“What is happening in Afghanistan is unparalleled in today's world. This is just unimaginable. And as you say, with the recent morality law that was just adopted, which makes women even more invisible in the country, it means that half of the population of the country is not able to contribute to the development. So, it will affect the country as a whole.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Türk, High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations:
“If you involve women as part of the negotiation team, you actually have the success rate for the conflicts to be resolved at a much higher level. So, there is to be less lip service and more action. And if I have one hope that comes also out of the Summit of the Future is that each and every member state adopts constitutional provisions that ensures gender parity in official decision making”

“If we want peace, peace with nature, peace among people. We have to listen. And that's what we have not been doing for many, many years or centuries. Right now, our big challenge, as human beings, is how to save our planet, how to avoid conflict, how to avoid nuclear wars. We have existential threats. Why are we in this fragile position? because we have not listened for centuries we have not listened to nature.”

“If to lead is to listen, we need leaders to listen better. We need leaders to take into account what is happening with a long-term view. Not. Attached to their short-term interest, for the next election, fore how many votes, or my popularity. We need leaders to take bold - many times unpopular - actions. And especially act.”

Storyline

On day two of the Summit of the Future Action Days, High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk today (21 Sep) called for “less lip service and more action,” while the former President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos said leaders need “to take bold - many times unpopular - actions. And especially act.”

Türk said “what is happening in Afghanistan is unparalleled in today's world. This is just unimaginable. And as you say, with the recent morality law that was just adopted, which makes women even more invisible in the country, it means that half of the population of the country is not able to contribute to the development. So, it will affect the country as a whole.”

He stressed that women need to be part of negotiation teams during peace processes, as when women are involved “you actually have the success rate for the conflicts to be resolved at a much higher level.”

The High Commissioner expressed hope that an outcome of the Summit of the Future will be that each and every member state adopts constitutional provisions that ensures gender parity in official decision making.”

Santos, who is a Nobel Peace laureate and Member of the Elders, said, “if we want peace, peace with nature, peace among people.

Santos said, “if to lead is to listen, we need leaders to listen better. We need leaders to take into account what is happening with a long-term view. Not. Attached to their short-term interest, for the next election, fore how many votes, or my popularity.”

Action Day 2 coincides with International Day of Peace, and focusses on multistakeholder partnership and action – paving a way towards a next chapter of multilateralism that is more inclusive and networked.

Today’s session aims to galvanize strong support for the core principles of Trust, Universality and Solidarity in tangible ways, with focus on an intergenerational dialogue for peace, dismantling patriarchal power structures, civilian protection in urban settings, a call to action for a future without terrorism, and imagining peace in a digital world.
