At the Summit of the Future Plenary today (23 Sep) in New York, Meloni said that any revision of governance at the UN, particularly regarding the Security Council, “makes sense only if it is done for everyone and not just for a few; we are not interested in creating new hierarchies, and we do not believe that there are first-class and second-class nations.”
She also said, “Artificial intelligence is primarily a great multiplier. But the question we must answer is: 'What do we want to multiply?'.”
She continued, “To be clear, if this multiplier were used to cure diseases that are currently incurable, then it would contribute to the common good. However, if this multiplier were used to further widen global imbalances, then the scenarios could be potentially catastrophic. Machines will not answer this question. We can do it. Politics must do it. And it is politics that must ensure that artificial intelligence remains under human control and keeps humanity at its center.”
She concluded, “Here is the role of multilateralism: not a club where we meet to write useless documents filled with good intentions, but the place where we must confront the urgency of decision-making.”
