“By gathering here today, we are saying loud and clear: you are enough. And this community is never alone. Joe and I are with you. In just the last few years, we’ve seen more countries legalize same-sex relationships, and recognize marriage equality. These are big victories—ones that bloom across history.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Jill Biden, US First Lady:
“Because change never happens on its own. It takes people—just like the ones in this room—speaking with one voice and declaring what is right. To say, change is coming. Let us lead the way. That’s the power of this community. To hold each other up, in all of our humanity. To heal one another. To share our inner strength. To create lasting change. To leave no one behind.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights:
“Discriminatory policies leave people behind, and we need to be very much aware of it, so we must join forces. The core group is very important for this to deliver on the promise of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that we are all born free and equal, to ensure that the bank for the future, as you said, has real impact on the ground for everyone and for all the generations to come, led by the brave LGBTI activists, and I really want to pay tribute to them for it.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights:
“It takes building alliances, meaningful engagement, having the difficult conversations, keeping the dialog open, especially when we face disagreement, but also speaking from a place of humility, recognizing that no state, including the ones in this room, as we just heard from, the First Lady, has a perfect human rights record when it comes to LGBTI, I wish to thank the core group for the incredibly important work that you are doing, and I look forward that we will work together to advance it, especially in these very difficult times. Thank you.”

Storyline

Within the framework of the Summit of the Future, today (23 Sep) the United Nations LGBTI Core Group held a high-level event titled "Leaving No One Behind, an inclusive Future for All," where First Lady Jill Biden emphasized support for the LGBTQ+ community and recognized recent progress in achieving equality.

Biden said, “by gathering here today, we are saying loud and clear: you are enough. And this community is never alone. Joe and I are with you." She noted that in recent years, more countries have legalized same-sex relationships and recognized marriage equality, describing these as “big victories—ones that bloom across history.”

Biden urged continued advocacy, saying, “because change never happens on its own. It takes people—just like the ones in this room—speaking with one voice and declaring what is right... That’s the power of this community. To hold each other up, in all of our humanity. To heal one another. To share our inner strength. To create lasting change. To leave no one behind.”

High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, also addressed the event, calling for unity and the importance of eliminating discriminatory policies. He said, “discriminatory policies leave people behind, and we need to be very much aware of it, so we must join forces.”

The High Commissioner also underscored the need for humility and collaboration to advance LGBTI rights, he said, “recognizing that no state, including the ones in this room…has a perfect human rights record when it comes to LGBTI.”

The overarching goal of the UN LGBTI Core Group in New York is to work within the United Nations framework on ensuring universal respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, specifically lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons, with a particular focus on protection from violence and discrimination.
