“Hell is breaking loose in Lebanon.”
5. Wide shot, Guterres addressing Council
6. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Monday was the bloodiest day in Lebanon in a generation. The Israel Defence Forces said that it struck some 1,600 Hezbollah targets. Many civilians were killed and many, many more were injured. Since then, Israel continued its deadly strikes across Lebanon, including in the southern suburbs of Beirut.”
7. Med shot, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon
8. SOUNDBITE (French) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“Diplomatic efforts have intensified to achieve a temporary ceasefire, allowing for delivery of humanitarian relief and paving the way for the presumption of more durable peace. We fully support these efforts. Earlier this week, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Ms Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert travelled to Israel for consultations, underscoring that military escalation is in no one's interest.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“I implore the council to work in lockstep to help put out this fire. The parties must immediately return to a cessation of hostilities and take real actions towards full implementation of resolutions 1559, and 1701. Civilians must be protected. Civilian infrastructure must not be targeted. The safety and security of all UN personnel and assets must be ensured. International law must be respected. To all sides, let us say in one clear voice, stop the killing and destruction, tone down the rhetoric and threats, step back from the brink. An all-out war must be avoided at all costs. It would surely be an all-out catastrophe. The people of Lebanon, as well as the people of Israel and the people of the world cannot afford Lebanon to become another Gaza.”
11. Wide shot, Lebanon’s President of the Council of Ministers Mohammad Najib Azmi Mikati addressing Council
12. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammad Najib Azmi Mikati, President of the Council of Ministers, Lebanon:
“In Lebanon, we are facing a blatant violation of our sovereignty and of human rights through the brutal practices of the Israeli enemy against our state and against the Lebanese people. Israel is violating our sovereignty by sending their war planes and drones to our skies, by killing our civilians, including youth, women and children, destroying homes and forcing families to flee under harsh humanitarian conditions. Furthermore, they are spreading terror and fear among the Lebanese citizens, in full view of the word which is watching idly.”
13. Med shot, Danon
14. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammad Najib Azmi Mikati, President of the Council of Ministers, Lebanon:
“The aggressor is claiming that they are only targeting combatants and weapons, but I assure you that the hospitals of Lebanon are full of civilian injured people, including dozens of women and children.”
15. Med shot, Danon addressing Council
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Israel:
“As Israeli civilians in the north watched with horror while their brothers and sisters in the South were tortured, raped, beheaded and kidnapped by Hamas terrorists. They fled to bomb shelters as Hezbollah rained down missiles in a show of solidarity - that's how they call it - with these butchers, with these savages.”
17. Wide shot, Council
18. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Israel:
“For years, we have been clear, we fully support resolution 1701, like the prime minister just mentioned. We support the resolution. We support its complete implementation. For years we have sounded the alarm over Hezbollah’s blatant violations. For years we have provided undeniable evidence of their military buildup, yet our warnings have been ignored. The time for half measures is over.”
19. Wide shot, Council
20. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Israel:
“At the head of the terrorist snake Iran has spread its venom against innocent Israeli civilians. From the Houthis in Yemen attempting to strangle global trade, to Hezbollah’s rocket barrages, from Hamas' practice of rape and kidnapping to the Shia militias in Syria and Iraq targeting Western personnel. We all know the Ayatollah stands behind it all.”
21. Wide shot, Council
22. SOUNDBITE (English) Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Iran:
“The Israeli regime has no intention of pursuing peace or agreeing to a ceasefire. Its real objective is to drag the entire region into a full scale war. Unfortunately, the United States and United Kingdom, unwavering support to Israel has given a carte blanche to them for all sorts of sinister behaviour. The ongoing aggression against Lebanon is fuelled by the failure of the international community, and in particular by the United Nations Security Council to hold Israel accountable for war crimes and genocide in Gaza.”

Secretary-General António Guterres today (25 Sep) told the Security Council that “hell is breaking loose in Lebanon,” noting that “Monday was the bloodiest day in Lebanon in a generation.”
Guterres said that the Israel Defence Forces had struck some 1,600 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, “many civilians were killed and many, many more were injured.”
Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health reported that 569 people were killed on Monday and Tuesday -- including 50 children and 94 women. Over 1,800 people were injured.
Lebanese authorities report a total of 1,247 deaths since October.
Guterres said, “diplomatic efforts have intensified to achieve a temporary ceasefire, allowing for delivery of humanitarian relief and paving the way for the presumption of more durable peace.”
He implored the Council “to work in lockstep to help put out this fire,” and stressed that “the people of Lebanon, as well as the people of Israel and the people of the world cannot afford Lebanon to become another Gaza.”
