3. SOUNDBITE (French) Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigeriens Abroad, Niger:
“Exactly one year ago in this same room, in this same rostrum, my country, Niger, was unfairly and unjustifiably deprived of speech. That's not the worst part. The worst thing is that, at the same time, representatives of other countries in the same situation as mine were allowed to speak. Even worse, they were received with honours by the United Nations Secretary-General. You will understand very, very easily with me. You will agree with me that there are double standards. There is a double standard that is likely to undermine the credibility of our common organization.”

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Niger, Bakary Yaou Sangaré today (30 Sep) chastised the General Assembly for having shown “a double standard that is likely to undermine the credibility of our common organization” when no representative of the country was accredited by the Credentials Committee to participate in the 78th General Debate, one year ago.
Quoting Niger’s Head of State, Général de Brigade Abdourahamane Tiani, Sangaré said, “no international organization will dictate to my country what to do, much less its agenda in terms of strategic or diplomatic partnerships.”
Last year, the UN Secretariat received requests from both the ousted government of President Mohamed Bazoum, and the coup-led regime of General Tiani to allow their respective representatives to speak at the General Debate.
No representative for Niger was put on the agenda of the General Debate.
In July 2023, the members of the Security Council strongly condemned the efforts to unconstitutionally change the legitimate Government of the Republic of Niger and called for the immediate and unconditional release of Bazoum, who has been detained since then.
