Shotlist

1. Various shots, HC at border with officials
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees:
“This is this is where we witnessed a massive influx of arrivals into Syria. Many Syrian refugees living in Lebanon and many Lebanese citizens crossing to seek refuge and safety on the Syria territory. This place, this crossing point, used to be the busiest one. Thousands and thousands of people cross and thousands of people continue to cross, in spite of the fact that that airstrike has largely interrupted communication along this road here. The Syrian authorities have received all people arriving irrespective of their nationality.”
3. Various shots, HC looking at area where recent strike happened
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees:
“70 percent of the people that have crossed from Lebanon into Syria here and in four or five other points are Syrian refugees in Lebanon. They went to Lebanon to escape the war in Syria. They're now going back to Syria, escaping the war in Lebanon. So it gives a sense of the tragic absurdity of the situation that we're living, of the fact that war is conducted and has been conducted in this region and in fact, in many other regions in a manner that obliges civilians to flee and this is why we just saw in Lebanon itself hundreds of thousands of displaced people and that's why we see this influx of many, many Syrians and Lebanese, and many of them are women and children.”
5. Various shots, crater formed by airstrike / people crossing with their belongings
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees:
“So this is a truly extraordinary moment and one that needs the attention of the international community, because, of course, what we need to do, especially in a country like Syria that is itself very much impacted by the humanitarian crisis, is try to help the people, have a dignified life, support the journey to wherever, whichever this dimension they go to in Syria. This is why we are appealing to the international community for help, for the humanitarian agencies, the UNHCR, other U.N. partners, the Red Crescent that are engaged in this part of the country.”

Storyline

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi is in Syria where he is meeting with authorities and with both Lebanese and Syrians who have fled across the border.

Over 185,000 people – mainly Syrians and Lebanese – have fled to Syria, according to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC). Israeli strikes targeting the road in the no-man's land at the key Masnaa border crossing has made movement along the route difficult for vehicles. Many determined to flee the crossing on foot.

UNHCR and partners, including the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, are present at the border crossings, providing food, water, blankets and mattresses to those arriving, and guiding them towards support available once in Syria. The humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire; the 2023 earthquake and the drawn-out conflict there have left critical infrastructure in tatters and millions in need of assistance.
