5. Various shots, newly arrived people who fled the fighting in Lebanon arrive in Syria in cars and busses
As of 7 Oct, more than 200,000 people have fled Lebanon into Syria over several border crossings. The majority of them are Syrian. On Friday, 4 Oct 2024, the highway between the main border crossing was bombed leaving people with no option but to cross on foot carrying what belongings they can. The destruction of the highway also impedes the entry of humanitarian aid into Lebanon.

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Abeer Etefa, Middle East Regional Spokesperson, WFP:
“We are in the middle of a regional war already. This is a dangerous milestone for this troubled part of the world. This crisis has separated families across borders and destructed vital food supply chains. Homes and livelihoods are being destroyed for millions of people who were already food insecure before this current crisis. This means greater need, and it means more requirements for the aid world at the time when resources are not coping with these needs.”

11. Newly arrived displaced people eating WFP datebars
WFP is distributing datebars and, when possible, hot meals to people fleeing the fighting in Lebanon on the Syrian side of the border crossings. Hot meals will be provided to people staying in shelters alongside ready to eat rations, regular food baskets and potentially cash assistance.
In Lebanon the estimated number of people affected by the conflict is 1.2 million, most of whom are internally displaced. To date, 181,000 displaced people are staying in 978 shelters while other IDPs are staying with their families, in rented houses or hotels, or public or private places, in addition to thousands of others who travelled by air or crossed Lebanese territory to Syria.
In less than a week, WFP scaled up its assistance significantly, delivering an additional 350,000 meals to displaced people. Amid escalating violence in Beirut, the south, and Bekaa, WFP in collaboration with the Government of Lebanon and its partners provided food and cash assistance to 160,200 people affected by the conflict since 24 September.
On Saturday (5 Oct) WFP and UNICEF conducted a joint convoy of six trucks to South Lebanon, delivering WFP food items and UNICEF water and hygiene supplies.
In Syria, since 23 September, an estimated 220,000 people have crossed into the country, fleeing increased hostilities in Lebanon. Of these, 70 percent are Syrian nationals. Following the closure of the road between Masnaa and Jdaidet Yabous border points, the number of new arrivals at the remaining border crossing increased notably.
In the early morning of 4 Oct, air strikes hit the international road between Masnaa and Jdaidet Yabous border points between Lebanon and Syria, halting traffic in both directions.
The Jdaidet Yabous crossing was the primary entry points for thousands of people fleeing increasing violence into Syria. As of today (8 Oct) the road remains unrepaired leaving people to cross the border on foot. The remaining border crossing points remain operational.
As of yesterday (7 Oct) WFP has reached over 100,000 people with date bars and fresh meals at the borders, and ready-to-eat rations in host communities. Preparations are underway to scale up assistance in host communities and shelters over the coming days.
