Storyline

State High Elections Committees from all ten states of South Sudan have gathered in Juba, the capital, for an induction workshop taking place from 8 to 11 October 2024.

The workshop was organized by the National Elections Committee (NEC), with support from the United Nations Integrated Electoral Assistance Team (IEAT) and is designed to introduce key foundational concepts and principles of effective electoral management to conduct credible and inclusive elections that reflect the will of the people.

With South Sudan extending its ongoing transitional period until February 2027, its long overdue elections are now expected to be held in December 2026.

This has allowed more times for all technical bodies under the NEC to be properly trained and funded. The IEAT is spearheading the training of the country’s election officials and governing bodies.

IEAT Principal Electoral Affairs Officer, Darren Nance, said, “We’ll be working at the national level and at each of the 10 states level, with the Elections Commission and the State High Elections Committees with their important role of planning and organizing the electoral process. Now that there is a two-year extension with elections envisioned for 2026, the work has to start now to get to voter registration in 2025 and then prepare for the elections in 2026.”

Interactions and information sharing in this workshop are aimed at strengthening links between the national and state levels to ensure that all efforts are put in place in preparation for substantive electoral operations nationwide. Professor Abednego Akok Kacuol, Chairperson of the NEC, urged attendees to grasp all the knowledge that will be imparted to them during the three-day workshop.

He said, “You are here to get knowledge in election processes and to get this there are people already prepared who will train you, who will impart knowledge to you. So, it is your turn to receive the knowledge. It is your turn to receive the knowledge, because nothing can be done without preparation.”

The role of the State High Election Committees is crucial, as they will be responsible for implementing electoral processes and building public trust at the local levels across the country.

This initial training will help spearhead their initiatives at the state level, beginning with setting up their offices and commencing engagements with civil society and political parties.

Tuor Majok Guech from Jonglei State High Election Committee, said, “The two-year extension is not a long time. It is a very short time. So, it is the right time now for all the members of the high-level committee to be given all the necessary skills. So that when the time of election comes, they will be able now to handle elections with full skills of election. So, this workshop facilitated by the UNMISS is a very good contribution to the success of the general elections.”
