2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
“It is clear that the accumulation of enriched uranium at very high levels has been a matter of concern for many around the world. And this is why I requested Islamic Republic of Iran to exercise restraint, not only to exercise restraint, but, also, if possible, to stop increasing the stockpile of sixty percent uranium. I have to say that this request of mine, was accepted by Iran.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
“A lot need to be done in the area of the outstanding verification issues and also in this very important area where a degree of, I would say, prudence, restraint collaboration, avoiding unnecessary escalations, in particular in a region that has suffered too much.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
“We have enlarged our cooperation and collaboration, extending our activities to critical electrical infrastructure, which is related to the nuclear power plants.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA):
“I think facility in and by itself, when it's a declared facility like Fordow, is not a dangerous place, in itself. What happens there can have repercussions on the non-proliferation regime and Iran's own obligations if if things go in the right direction. So, that's, that's what I could say about it. It was very important because it's a facility that has, that has pilot facilities there. They do a lot of research there, so it's important for me to assess personally the degree of advancement, which is quite impressive in terms of new generations of centrifuges, as you know, which one can see there.”

Storyline

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said that Iran accepted his request to not further expand its stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60 percent.

The UN atomic watchdog chief Rafael Grossi addressed the Board of Governors today (20 Nov) in Vienna.

Grossi recently returned from Tehran where he met with President of the Islamic Republic of Iran H.E. Mr Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister H.E. Mr Abbas Araghchi, and other senior Iranian officials. In addition to the meetings, the IAEA chief travelled to the nuclear sites of Fordow and Natanz where he visited the enrichment plants that are under Agency safeguards and regular inspections, and other enrichment-related installations.

During the high-level meetings between the Agency and Iran in Tehran on 14 November 2024, the possibility of Iran not further expanding its stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60 percent U-235 was discussed, including technical verification measures necessary for the Agency to confirm this, if implemented. On 16 November 2024, the Agency verified at Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant and at Fuel Enrichment Plant that Iran had begun implementation of preparatory measures aimed at stopping the increase of its stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60 percent U-235. Exchanges between the Agency and Iran on this matter are expected to continue.

Grossi said, “A lot need to be done in the area of the outstanding verification issues and also in this very important area where a degree of, I would say, prudence, restraint collaboration, avoiding unnecessary escalations, in particular in a region that has suffered too much.”

On Ukraine, the IAEA chief said, “We have enlarged our cooperation and collaboration, extending our activities to critical electrical infrastructure, which is related to the nuclear power plants.”

Asked about his visit to Fordow in Iran at a press conference later, Grossi said, “I think facility in and by itself, when it's a declared facility like Fordow, is not a dangerous place, in itself.
