“In these turbulent times, too many people are convinced that differences must define us, but the most powerful force of all is the recognition that we are more united by our common fate than divided by our distinct identities. That is the essence of the United Nations and the raison d’être of the Alliance of Civilizations. Let’s stand together with our shared faith in humanity.”

The UN Alliance of Civilizations opened its 10th Global Forum in Cascais, Portugal, with Heads of State and delegations and civil society groups from more than 100 countries, adopting a forward-looking declaration and hosting a plethora of discussions centered on bridging intercultural and inter-faith understanding.
The Global Forum’s theme this year is United in Peace: Restoring trust, reshaping the future. At the opening ceremony, UN Secretary-General António Guterres thanked the Government of Portugal for its hospitality in hosting the three-day event.
“At the risk of being somewhat partial, I would like to commend the decision to hold this Forum in my country and in the beautiful city of Cascais,” said the UN Secretary-General, who was Portugal’s Prime Minister from 1995 to 2002.
The Global Forum serves as a reminder that even through times of uncertainty, the world is more united that divided, Mr. Guterres said, emphasizing that “In these turbulent times, too many people are convinced that differences must define us, but the most powerful force of all is the recognition that we are more united by our common fate than divided by our distinct identities. That is the essence of the United Nations and the raison d’être of the Alliance of Civilizations. Let’s stand together with our shared faith in humanity.”
Opening the Global Forum, President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Souza praised the history of Portugal and its people.
The president said, “What makes us truly great is our universal diaspora, composed by friendly and tolerant people, who make Portugal a unique bridge between oceans and nations.”
Later in the day, at the high-level Group of Friends meeting, the UN Secretary-General was joined by Portugal’s Foreign Affairs Minister Paulo Rangel, the Alliance’s High Representative Miguel Ángel Moratinos and representatives of Spain and Türkiye, who co-sponsor the UNAOC.
Secretary-General Guterres said that “as the tide of hatred and intolerance becomes a tsunami, we need even more bold voices and bolder action.”
“That is why I am asking countries to dig deeper to help replenish the Alliance’s Voluntary Trust Fund,” he said. “Your support and friendship are a lifeline for the vital mission of the Alliance. Together, let’s ensure this essential effort is sustained and grows at this most critical time.”
The next Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilization is due to take place in 2026 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
