“Next to my house an entire residential building was bombed, 200 were killed, for a whole year and until today, they have been under the rubble. My children and I had to sleep in my home, next to all these dead people. No words can describe the feelings we experience, it is hard for anyone to feel what we felt. Despite that, the hardest experience was when we were ordered to leave.”

“They are desperately in need for basic necessities. I've never seen in the last 13 months such a need for food, shelter, water and other lifesaving essentials. Food in particular is at its lowest point. There is nothing absolutely in the markets in the middle of Gaza, there's no fresh fruit. There's no fresh vegetables.”

Storyline

The head of the UN Human Rights Office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory visited the Gaza strip to strengthen the work of protection cluster, which OHCHR coordinates along with other entities.

Ajith Sunghay said, “I'm here in Gaza for the last five days. The main goal of my visit has been to strengthen the work of protection cluster, which OHCHR coordinates along with other entities. We met many of our implementing partners, both national as well as international, including the UN.”

Sunghay added, “We also met many youths who are our frontline protection defenders. We met the communities that have been displaced from different parts of Gaza who are based in middle Gaza as well as in other parts of Rafah and Khan Younis.”

Heba, a displaced Palestinian mother of five, said, “We were displaced on 12 October, following orders from Israeli occupation forces orders to leave our houses to this area.
