In the midst of a tragic reality, Palestinian displaced families west of Nuseirat in central Gaza endure severe suffering. They live near a landfill, braving relentless rain and bitter cold in their tattered tents.
The flimsy tents, battered by strong winds, leave the displaced struggling to secure them against the harsh winter chill.
The family of Mahmoud Al-Daqas resorts to using plastic salvaged from the landfill to ignite fires for warmth and cooking.
Mahmoud explains, “Last night, it rained heavily. Believe me, my children and I stayed awake all night holding containers to collect water leaking into the tent. My youngest shivered from the cold, and we didn’t know what to do.”
His wife, Hanadi, describes their plight, saying, “We suffer from the sound of dogs that terrify us at night. Our tent is open and torn. When it rained last night, we were completely flooded. I hope compassionate hearts will help us and see the state of our children.”
Hassan Abu Amra, another displaced individual who shares a single tent with 15 family members and two relatives, states, “We’re drowning in the rain, and the cover is torn. We try to fix it, but it’s no use. My children are dying from the cold, and no one cares about us.”
The displaced in the camp west of Nuseirat continue their relentless efforts to repair their worn-out tents using basic materials to withstand the rain and wind.
Nearby, towering heaps of waste exacerbate the already dire health and humanitarian conditions.
