“On the 6th of January. At 12 pm local time, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, DPRK, launched what it described as a new type of intermediate range hypersonic ballistic missile loaded with a hypersonic glide vehicle. According to the DPRK official statement, the missile flew in line with its predetermined flight trajectory at a speed amounting to 12 times the speed of sound and landed in the open sea.”

As a permanent member of the Security Council, China is always conscientiously implemented all DPRK related resolutions and fulfilled its due international obligations. Meanwhile, as a close neighbor of the peninsula and responsible major country, China has always been playing a constructive role in its own way in promoting political settlement and maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula and achieving long term peace and stability in those North East Asia.”

“A test of fire of the new type, the intermediate range hypersonic ballistic missile, is a part of the plan for development of national defense capability to enhance sustainability and effective strategic deterrence and mitigate changing security environments of the region. As such, it has no slightest negative impact on security of a neighboring country.”

Following the launch of a new type of intermediate range hypersonic ballistic missile loaded with a hypersonic glide vehicle by the DPRK, Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari today (8 Jan) told the Security Council that “diplomatic engagement remains the only pathway to sustainable peace, and the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
The 6 January lunch, Khiari said, was “the fourth launch of an intermediate range ballistic missile since the beginning of 2024,” while in the same time period, he added, the DPRK “has also launched one intercontinental ballistic missile and multiple short range ballistic missiles” and “also attempted to launch a military reconnaissance satellite.”
The missile flew in line with its predetermined flight trajectory and landed in the open sea.
United States Ambassador Dorothy Shea told the Council that it “must take seriously its responsibility to vigilantly monitor implementation of binding Security Council sanctions measures to counter the DPRK s threats to international peace and security.”
Shea said Council members “must work together to press Russia and China to address the DPRK’s unlawful ballistic missile launches and malicious cyber activities that threaten us all.”
The Republic of Korea Ambassador Joonkook Hwang for his part said, “if the Council remains unable or unwilling to stop and hold the DPRK accountable for persistently violating binding Security Council resolutions, egregiously abusing the NPT regime, and relentlessly pursuing aggressive and dangerous military adventures, the international community will eventually face an even greater menace.”

China’s Ambassador Geng Shuang highlighted China’s role as a permanent member of the Council and said, “the starting point and goal of the Security Council should be to advance the political settlement of the issue, rather than just to make accusations or exert pressure, much less to allow yourself to be reduced to a tool of a certain country for its political self-interest.”
