“Security Council members welcome the election of Mr. Joseph Aoun as new President of Lebanon, which put an end to more than two years of vacancy of this important position. Security Council members emphasised the importance of the election of a president in Lebanon to ensuring fully functional state institutions to address the pressing political, economic and security challenges of the country. Security Council members reaffirm their strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon. The Security Council members reiterated their commitment to stability in Lebanon and call for the full implementation of resolution 1701 of 2006 and previous Security Council relevant resolutions related to the situation in Lebanon.”
4. Pan right, Bendjama walks away
In a statement read today (9 Jan) by the President of the Security Council Amar Bendjama, Council members welcomed the election of Joseph Aoun as the new President of Lebanon, “which put an end to more than two years of vacancy of this important position.”
Council members, Bendjama said, “emphasised the importance of the election of a president in Lebanon to ensuring fully functional state institutions to address the pressing political, economic and security challenges of the country.”
The statement reaffirmed Council members’ “strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon,” and reiterated “their commitment to stability in Lebanon and call for the full implementation of resolution 1701 of 2006 and previous Security Council relevant resolutions related to the situation in Lebanon.”
Also, through a statement, Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated Aoun and said this was a critical step towards overcoming Lebanon’s political and institutional impasse after over 2 years of presidential vacuum.
