6. SOUNDBITE (English) Filippo Grandi, UN High commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR):
“In one month will be the third anniversary of the beginning of the full-scale invasion and escalation of the war in Ukraine. And much as other crises have started and captured the attention of the international community, it is important to remember that people continue to be impacted by this war, and people continue to have urgent humanitarian needs. It is so visible here in this town of Bilopillia which is just a few kilometers from the frontline. You can hear the shelling as we speak. And what is extremely urgent in Ukraine is to help people with heating with the, everything that is needed, by way of energy. The destruction of the energy infrastructure has generated enormous needs that can be offset with humanitarian contribution, with cash assistance, with provision of generators and what is also important three years into this war is to remember that needs are not just the urgent material ones. I have met in this trip, many people who have been impacted psychologically, many people who have legal problems. So psychosocial assistance, legal assistance are incredibly important.”

Storyline

The United Nations and its partners are urging Governments, donors and individuals to contribute to the humanitarian and refugee response to support the people of Ukraine, both at home and abroad as the full-scale war approaches its fourth year.

The United Nations and partners launched today (16 Jan) twin humanitarian and refugee response plans for 2025, appealing for US$3.32 billion to support 8.2 million people affected by the war and resulting crisis within Ukraine and across borders.

The plans – to be launched in Kyiv with the Government of Ukraine – outline strategies to address the needs of people whose lives have been upended by the war.

They also emphasize the importance of international solidarity to sustain critical humanitarian efforts in 2025.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi visited several frontline regions of Ukraine, meeting displaced and war-affected people as well as the local organizations working with UNHCR in the humanitarian response.

Humanitarian organizations inside Ukraine aim to assist 6 million people in 2025 with protection services, cash and other humanitarian assistance like food, healthcare, shelter, education and other vital services.

With sufficient funding and access, aid workers can continue delivering in hard-to-reach communities, including those near the war’s deadly frontlines.

The humanitarian community stands ready to reach people in need wherever they are.
