Storyline

“In ten days from today, 80 years would have passed after the Holocaust, but antisemitism is still persistent in many parts of the world,” said Angel Moratinos, the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC).

Speaking to journalists toda (17 Jan) at the United Nations headquarters in New York, he unveiled a new action plan to strengthen the UN’s response to antisemitism, which he described as “our collective responsibility to eradicate.”

The action plan, developed under the leadership of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, builds on past efforts to combat antisemitism and includes measures aimed at ensuring a more coordinated approach.

“The United Nations was created in the aftermath of the Holocaust,” Moratinos said. “Racism and racial discrimination are an affront to the core values entrenched in the Charter of the United Nations and a violation of our common humanity.”

Key elements of the plan include the creation of a UN Monitoring and Evaluation Working Group to assess the effectiveness of policies, enhancing understanding of antisemitism among UN personnel, and mainstreaming the plan across UN frameworks and programs.

The initiative emphasizes education and dialogue, with Moratinos highlighting the importance of distinguishing criticism of governments from prejudice against the Jewish community. He emphasized that criticism of “any government” is valid but must not influence broader attitudes toward “the Jewish people, the Jewish community, and, in this sense, Israel.”

Moratinos reiterated the urgency of addressing antisemitism as part of the broader fight against extremism and discrimination, underscoring that “no form of prejudice or hatred should find a home anywhere.”
