Storyline

Displaced families and children in Gaza City gathered Thursday (16 Jan) to celebrate the announcement of a ceasefire agreement, embracing moments of joy and hope after enduring over 15 months of war.

In a statement by Executive Director Catherine Russell, UNICEF welcomed the ceasefire deal announcement between the parties to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Reportedly the war has left at least 14,500 children dead, thousands more injured, an estimated 17,000 unaccompanied or separated from their parents, and nearly one million displaced from their homes.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Saber Bahaa Abdel Dayem, 11-Year-Old Displaced Child:

UNICEF and partners are ready to scale up its response, as the ceasefire is expected to afford humanitarian actors the opportunity to safely roll out the needed response inside the Gaza Strip

This would require unimpeded access to reach all children and families with essential food and nutrition, health care and psychosocial support, clean water, and sanitation, education, and learning, as well as cash assistance and the resumption of commercial trucking operations.
