Storyline

As the ceasefire in Gaza took effect today, residents gradually started returning to inspect their homes, with signs of devastation visible in every corner.

After more than 470 days of war, citizens torn between joy and shock wandered through the rubble of their homes north of Nuseirat Camp in central Gaza.

Extensive destruction was evident in various areas of the Gaza Strip, particularly in Jabalia Camp in the northern part of the region.

Shadi Jomaa Abu Sheha, one of those returning to inspect his home north of Nuseirat, described the scene. He said, “the halting of the bloodshed is an indescribable feeling. I thank God that I survived this war safely. But when I returned to my home, I found nothing but destruction and ruin. I built this house piece by piece, and now I see only its remnants. I can’t put this scene into words."

In Nuseirat Camp, central Gaza, gatherings of citizens celebrated the ceasefire.

Maryam Haboub, one of the displaced women in the camp, expressed her feelings. She said, “this is an immense joy. I cried the moment I heard the news of the ceasefire. We hope that a full agreement will be reached and that we can return to our homes safely. This is the greatest joy of the ceasefire, and we pray that it will be completed with our return to our homes and children."

In the Jabalia Camp area, northern Gaza, aerial footage revealed the extent of destruction that had affected civilian homes and infrastructure, with no corner spared from the war’s impact. The footage also showed residents attempting to resume normal life amid the massive devastation.

Meanwhile, Suleiman Al-Rawagh, inspecting his home in Nuseirat Camp, shared his emotions. He said, “it’s an indescribable feeling with the sounds of shelling and scenes of destruction. We are returning to inspect our homes and area and check on them but fear still grips us."

Despite the pain and great losses, Gaza’s residents expressed hope that the ceasefire would mark the beginning of an end to the suffering that had lasted for over a year. General scenes showed some families returning to their homes north of Nuseirat, though many questions remain unanswered about the future and reconstruction.

Meanwhile, on the Egyptian side of the Rafah Crossing, hundreds of trucks were on the move, entering the Gaza strip carrying desperately needed aid.
