Storyline

The World Health Organization (WHO) today (20 Jan) welcomed the Gaza ceasefire, hostage, and prisoner release deal, which, it said, “brings hope for millions of people whose lives have been ravaged by the conflict.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Zaher Abu Faraya, Displaced Person:
“We hope to God that the truce will be the opening of the door to goodness with security and peace of mind, and that we will return to rebuild our homes and live a human life. The life of human beings, after the suffering we have seen and the pain we have lived.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Zaher Abu Faraya, Displaced Person:
“We hope that the first thing is to repair the hospitals so that they can help the poor Palestinian people and help them get treated.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Khader Ahmad Zyadah, Displaced Person:
“This belongs to my fourth grader little girl Iman, of course she was able to take some of her toys with her when were forced to leave, yet a lot of her toys stayed here, and I am sure she will be happy when she sees it because she has memories with this toy. A child is by nature emotionally attached to her toys, so how about the place she lived in, and had great memories in? Now she’s displaced, and with no clue when she will be able to come back to her house, because we obviously need a lot of time to rehabilitate this house.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Khader Ahmad Zyadah, Displaced Person:
“I will try to repair as much as I can, and I’ll start by removing the rubble of course, and wait for everyone to provide help, because it’s been a year, and four months for us with no work, the money we had we spent it like everyone else, on moving from a place to a place, and on treatment.”

The WHO said addressing the massive needs and restoring the health system will be an extremely complex and challenging task, given the scale of destruction, operational complexity and constraints involved.

Billions in investment are needed to support recovery of the health system and the agency “is ready to scale up the response together with UN health partners including UNFPA, UNICEF, UNRWA and 67 Health Cluster partners.”
