“This used to be a relatively small hospital with 40 beds, but during the war in crisis they expanded to more than 200 beds, and at one stage it provided services for 600 dialysis patients. there was a lot going on. Currently, well, the damages are enormous. It's basically destroyed. At WHO, we will work with ministry and partners. So what to do? What kind of services to provide in Rafah now people are coming back to Rafah? Of course, first and foremost, primary healthcare and primary healthcare services. We will also look at prefab. Can we get a prefab and a prefab hospital in Rafah to work or more to, to be able to provide more of the referral care?”

“Now, here, this is the Kamal Adwan hospital, which used to be the paediatric hospital for the north of Gaza. During the crisis and the war, it harboured hundreds and hundreds of patients here.”

“27th of December, the last staff were forcibly evacuated and a number of them detained. The hospital was already partly damaged and partly destroyed. But what has happened after 27th December is unimaginable. I mean, like, the whole hospital is not recognizable anymore. I mean, like the emergency department, the neonatal intensive care, everything is burned down. There's nothing left of it.”

“WHO has been and will be continuing to supply fuel, medical supplies, essential medicines and equipment wherever it's needed, including To Shifa Hospital. What was really good to see when we were making a tour around the hospital, was that substantial rehabilitation is going on. Rehabilitation and renovation. There's currently work going on to establish various inpatients department, but also very much needed intensive care units and neonatology.”

Fifteen months of conflict have deeply impacted Gaza's health system, leaving a trail of severe destruction. Only 18 out of 36 hospitals remain functional across the Gaza Strip. In North Gaza, where more than 545,000 people have returned over the past week, only one hospital is partially functional. In Rafah, Al-Najjar and Al-Emarati hospitals have been destroyed, only the UAE field hospital is partially operational.
