Storyline

On World Radio Day, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) held a special event in Renk under the banner “Peace Begins with Me” to encourage communities to celebrate diversity and embrace unity.

Attracting 4000 people, the event featured 20 vibrant cultural, musical and theatrical performances and was broadcast live to audiences across the country on UNMISS' Radio Miraya network.

SOUNDBITE (English) Pasi Juha Havusela, Coordinator, United Nations Police:
“The people of South Sudan have waited for positive change. You have been patient, resilient, and persistent in pursuing peace despite many challenges. Today, there is still much to be done to secure the better future that you deserve. As a partner for peace, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan stands shoulder to shoulder with you on this journey.”

“Today we have come together in Renk to recognize the many challenges that you face but also to seize the opportunity to unite for peace.”

Nestled close to the border between South Sudan and Sudan, Renk has traditionally been a bustling trade hub. But its resources are stretched to breaking point, with one million refugees and returnees pouring into the town after fleeing the war in Sudan.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Diing Deng Lueth Nol, Minister of Labor, Upper Nile State:
“Today, we come together to honour and recognize the vital role radio plays in our lives. Whether morning or evening, when you turn on the radio, you are accessing valuable programs that address the topics that matter to you. If you can seize the opportunity to call in, share your perspective.”

Radio is the primary source of information in South Sudan, given poor internet penetration and limited access to traditional media. UNMISS-operated Radio Miraya has the largest network, reaching large, diverse, and remote communities through more than 30 transmission sites. As a voice for peace, it provides information of importance and is a lifeline during crises.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sadiga Abdallah, Prosecutor and Legal Advisor, Renk County:
“Radio Miraya has significantly contributed to raising awareness on various issues and educating the people of South Sudan. It shares political, sports, and cultural news, particularly for those living in remote areas, helping them better understand their rights.”

Radio provides a vital inclusive and interactive platform at a time when South Sudan is navigating the difficult journey from conflict to peace and democracy.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Muzamil Ojowk Ajak Deng, Minister of Animal Resources and Representative of the Governor, Upper Nile State:
“Today, while we are here in South Sudan, an independent country, we celebrate media outlets' pivotal role in building our nation.”

For the people of Renk, the event was an opportunity to stand together and take action for positive change.
