8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fadi Alameh, Chairperson, Foreign Affairs Committee, Lebanon:
“With the end of the ceasefire arrangements on 18 February, our visit as representatives of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Committee to UNIFIL Command in southern Lebanon comes to emphasize the importance of the role and presence of UNIFIL peacekeepers on our borders with occupied Palestine and their responsibility to monitor the borders for decades. We express our deep respect for the sacrifices made by UNIFIL peacekeepers during this period. It is necessary to emphasize the extent of the harmony of UNIFIL, as leadership and personnel, with the Lebanese fabric and its cooperation with the official authorities, civil society organizations and residents, specifically in the areas of its deployment in southern Lebanon, which makes the recent attack it was subjected to near the airport an individual incident that we condemn, as unanimously expressed by the Lebanese forces. We trust the security institutions that followed up on the matter and are working to hold the perpetrators accountable according to the law. Finally, we hope that UNIFIL peacekeepers, the United Nations and the international community will work, in cooperation with Lebanon, to end the Israeli occupation and withdraw its forces as soon as possible, in accordance with international laws. Thank you.”
