Storyline

Temperatures are still low in Gaza, and heavy rains and cold weather are making survival even more difficult for displaced families, living without adequate shelter, such as in tents made of plastic sheeting.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Iman, Displaced Person:
“As you can see it’s pouring water on us from here, and am trying to stabilize it with sticks, but it’s still pouring from this side, so I moved my children to the other side, and our stuff is everywhere, but it still pours on us, and water is all over the place. We have not slept tonight, and I have no idea what to do, also the wind is so strong, and it’s blowing up the tent. I don’t know how one lives in such situation. Our condition is extremely bad.”

“The most common diseases now are serious skin diseases. My little sister suffers a lot from skin diseases, and I mean abnormal skin diseases, because of the polluted water we get from the wells. The water is very polluted because of which we have heart and intestinal diseases.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mahmoud, Displaced Person:
“As you know, it’s a stormy week, with low temperatures. But thank God it went fine, yet the past few days were very difficult for the children. We had to hold them close to our bodies during the night, so they stay warm.”

These harsh conditions have reportedly claimed the lives of seven newborns due to hypothermia, according to the Ministry of Health.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sara, Displaced Person:
“The weather is extremely cold for the children, and the mother suffers when she’s dealing with her baby. For instance, when the baby needs a bath or a diaper or cloths change, it feels like we’re doing it outside, and a lot of children died due to the cold weather.”
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Sara, Displaced Person:
“We are unable to cover them, and care for them. Fuel, and gas are scarce, no electricity, no central heating of course. There’s literally nothing to warm these kids, even blankets are limited.”

Low temperatures and poor shelter conditions are also increasing the risk of disease spread, especially for infants, pregnant and lactating women and the elderly.
