IAEA Director General's Rafael Grossi addressed the Board of Governors today (3 Mar) in Vienna and said, “The situation in Ukraine, which continues to be extremely fragile and precarious as I have, indicated on several occasions. And, of course, in in consultation, with Ukraine, with the Russian Federation, with you, with you all. It's important that all these missions continue.”

The Director General also highlighted the safety situation at Fukushima, Japan, where the IAEA continues independent monitoring of ALPS-treated water discharges and ensures that safety standards are met.

He said, “I could participate, with, the experts of the IAEA of Japan, naturally, China, Switzerland, and the Republic of Korea in an, in a new round of, sample taking and monitoring of the control discharge of water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.”

He also said that he was in Iran, where he had “important and constructive meetings there. Doubts continue. Clarifications continue to be needed.”

He stressed, “As we know, the diplomatic activity around the situation in Iran, is not limited to what we do. There are other important countries engaging with Iran, and we hope that this will lead us to, to a better place, to a better situation where all, outstanding issues will be clarified, and we will be making real tangible progress, which is really needed.”

Globally, the IAEA is advancing various initiatives, including nuclear security and safety, and plans to launch ATLAS (a framework for peaceful maritime nuclear technology).

According to the Agency, there is a growing global interest in nuclear energy, and the IAEA's efforts are focused on promoting safety and collaboration in the sector.

The Director General emphasized the need for public support to expand nuclear energy, which is crucial for meeting global electricity demands while addressing climate change.

Addressing the presser later today, Grossi said, “The nuclear nonproliferation regime must be protected, must be strengthened. And I should recall that the United States and the Russian Federation are the depositories of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty of nineteen seventy. So, I think it's very important that everybody is reminded of its responsibilities. So, I hope we will continue in this way.”
