Storyline

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Yambio town in South Sudan’s Western Equatoria State; local women’s groups, civil society activists, and community members, all supporting the causes of women and girls, and advocating for gender equality.

Dramas, dances and other musical performances marked the occasion, supported by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and humanitarian partners, behind the national theme Empowering Women and Girls to Promote Equality, Safety and a Healthy Environment.

SOUNDBITE (English) Nagaski Gabriel, Member, Yambio’s Women’s Group:

“Women need to participate meaningfully and safely to promote and sustain peace. So, a healthy and safe environment can promote women’s meaningful participation. But when the environment is toxic and violent, women cannot participate meaningfully.”

With South Sudan currently experiencing political instability, women expressed their aspiration that a safe daily life and true gender equality will emerge sooner rather than later.
