4. SOUNDBITE (English) UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi (English)
“On the one hand, we must really make every possible effort for peace to prevail again in Sudan. To steer, to induce those waging war against each other and against their own people, to steer them towards that negotiating table that has eluded us for two years now, very soon two years. And the second is, meanwhile, the humanitarian operation needs to continue. It needs to be continued inside Sudan for the displaced, for those that are affected by war. It needs be continued across the border from here and it needs to continue in support of the refugees in places like Adré, Chad, where I am now, and in other countries hosting refugees. Humanitarian assistance inside Sudan and in neighbouring countries is decreasing, needs are increasing, these trends have to be reversed otherwise we will see lost lives and more suffering.”

Storyline

The Sudan emergency has become one of the largest and most devastating displacement crises in the world today, with a staggering nearly 13 million people forced to flee from the ongoing war, both within and outside of the country.

One in every three Sudanese are now forcibly displaced. Chad is hosting 1.3 million forcibly displaced people, including more than 760,000 Sudanese refugees who have arrived since the brutal war in their country broke out in April 2023. Families continue to cross the border every day – most of them women and children – piling pressure onto one of the world’s poorest countries, which was already reeling from the impacts of extreme weather shocks, conflict, and economic instability.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi visited Chad to meet with the people who have been forced to flee, the communities that host them and authorities in the country.
