Storyline

UNICEF Spokesperson James Elder visited North and South Kivu to see the impact of escalating violence in eastern DRC firsthand and assess UNICEF’s intensified response.

Since 24 January 2025, escalating violence in eastern DRC has forced more than a million additional people to flee their homes, including around 400,000 children.

The situation on the ground remains highly volatile, with numbers rising daily. Despite the challenges, worsened by global funding cuts, UNICEF’s frontline teams have stayed in Goma and Bukavu
throughout the crisis, providing vital support to vulnerable communities.
