UNICEF and partners are distributing household water treatment chemicals to curb community transmission, deploying water chlorinators across water points to provide safe drinking water, and mobilizing rapid response teams to support water chlorination and conduct disinfection activities

“Sennar is now reporting around 91 cases with high mortality, and also now to reduce this mortality, we, expand the service to, all these corners and, that provided a closer, service to the community. And also, in addition to the treatment we provided, awareness and prevention activities to the community, that is needed in hotspot areas. Now we are approaching, rainy season. The situation might worsening. So additional resources needed. And also, we have contingency plan to scale up the response with, partners, in the state. In addition to, that, already we had ongoing, UNICEF integrated response, including health, wash, SPC, and still we are, in need of, support, that to expand and the scale up of, our activities.”

According to health authorities, more than 7,700 cholera cases - including over 1,000 cases in children under the age of five - and 185 associated deaths have been reported in Khartoum State since January 2025. UNICEF and partners are working with the Federal Ministry of Health to curb the spread of the deadly disease and save lives through high interventions such as ensuring access to clean and safe water, providing water purification tablets to improve the quality of drinking water, activating community awareness drives to educate families on proper hygiene practices including handwashing with soap, delivering critical supplies including oral rehydration salts to support early care.
