Reaffirming the condemnation of any military escalation in the Middle East, UN senior official for political affairs Rosemary DiCarlo stressed, “We must at all costs avoid a growing conflagration which would have enormous global consequences.”
The Security Council held an emergency meeting today (13 Jun) after the Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes across Iran this morning, and in retaliation, Iran launched some 100 drones towards Israel, all of which were reportedly intercepted before reaching Israeli airspace.
While the meeting was in session, there were reports of Iranian missiles heading towards Israel, the Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs told the Council.
DiCarlo underlined the obligation of Member States, “not to use force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.”
She reiterated the call by the Secretary-General to both sides to “show maximum restraint at this critical moment and to avoid at all costs a descent into deeper and wider regional conflict.”
Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA), briefed the Council via video link.
He said, “Iran confirmed that initially only the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant had been attacked in today's strikes. This facility contains the Fuel Enrichment Plant and the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant. For his part, US Representative McCoy Pitt told the Council, “Israel advised us this action was necessary for its self-defense. Every sovereign nation has the right to defend itself and Israel is no exception.”
“The United States was informed of the strikes ahead of time but was not militarily involved in these strikes,” Pitt reiterated.
He also said, “Let me be crystal clear: no government, proxy, or independent actor should target American citizens, American bases, or other American infrastructure in the region. The consequences for Iran would be dire.”
Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani “strongly and unequivocally” condemned the “barbaric and criminal attacks. A series of targeted assassinations were against senior military officials, nuclear scientists, and innocent civilians,” he said.
Ambassador Iravani said, “We will not forget that our people lost their lives as result of the Israeli attacks with American weapons,” stressing that “these actions amount to a declaration of war.”
