So, as a Secretary General of the United Nations, I not only pay tribute to the leader of a nation, but I pay tribute to a distinguished citizen of the world that has contributed to the rest of all the planet and to create harmony between humankind and nature.”

“The people of Nuku, Avinun Olgeta! (Tok Pisin: ‘Good afternoon!’) I am here to bring a hug, a big hug from the people of the world to the people of Nuku and the people or Mt Hagen. And I have two messages from the world to you. First message, a message of gratitude. We are extremely grateful because of the forest that you are preserving for the world. Such a beautiful group of people, such a beautiful landscape. Keeping this forest that benefits the whole world. You have heard about climate change, you know the temperatures are rising, and in the Pacific, there are islands that are sinking, there are droughts that are making life impossible for farmers. There are floods that destroy houses and properties. So, thank you very much in name of the world for the way you preserve this beautiful forest. And the second message is a message of solidarity. I spoke with the Prime Minister. He has great plans for this country to have much more roads, to have much more schools, to have much more health centers, but this is a huge country full of mountains with certain remote areas. It's a very difficult job that he has, and I want to express here a very strong appeal, an appeal to the international community to support the government and the people of Papua New Guinea, for the government and the people of Papua New Guinea to be able to accelerate the progress in roads, the progress in schools, the progress in our centers to the benefit of everybody. And the United Nations will be at your side, and we will be loud and clear, telling the international community that these beautiful people deserve solidarity because you are giving the world an enormous gift with your forest, it's time for the world to pay back. Thank you very much. All the best!”

Today (Sep 04), in Papua New Guinea, at the invitation of the Prime Minister, James Marape, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres traveled to the coastal town of Wewak.
He laid a wreath at the resting place of the country’s first Prime Minister, Michael Somare and said, "as a Secretary General of the United Nations, I not only pay tribute to the leader of a nation, but I pay tribute to a distinguished citizen of the world."
Antonio Guterres then traveled to the Nuku district to one of the country's remote rural areas, where he met community members and government officials. On his way there, he saw parts of the third biggest rainforest in the world.
Speaking at an event there, the Secretary-General highlighted the challenges brought about by climate change in the Pacific region. He said we are extremely grateful because of the forest that the people of New Guinea are preserving for the world.
The Secretary-General ended the day in the Mount Hagen area, in the country's highlands. There, he sat down with a group of UN partners and civil society representatives. Tomorrow, the Secretary-General will begin the trip back to New York, arriving on Saturday morning.
