Storyline

Hundreds of Palestinian families continued to flee Gaza City in the north of the enclave via the overcrowded coastal al-Rashid Street, amid a severe shortage of transportation and soaring travel costs, as Israeli military operations persist in the city.

Along the coastal road, trucks and cars loaded with belongings lined up, while others were forced to walk or push carts in a journey southward to the central and southern parts of the Strip. Residents said transport costs for a single family could reach as high as $3,000, a sum many cannot afford due to the loss of income sources.

Abu Nader Siam, an elderly man who fled on foot with his wife, said, “I am coming from Tel al-Hawa neighborhood in Gaza City. By God, they did not leave a single house or neighborhood without bombing it. The shelling continues, and they dropped leaflets ordering us to evacuate. We have been walking for six hours because we couldn’t find a car or any means of transport. Up until now, it’s been six hours walking on our feet.”

His wife, Zakia, added, “Our house turned into rubble. We went to Shujaiya neighborhood, then we displaced to Sha‘f neighborhood in Gaza City before it was bombed. After that, we went to the seashore west of Gaza City and stayed there for two nights without tents for me and my husband. We sat on the sidewalk near the tents and sheltered beside one, then continued walking on foot.”

The damaged Wadi Gaza Bridge was jammed with dozens of broken-down vehicles, with no authority managing the traffic. Other displaced people complained about the lack of tents or sufficient space for shelter in the south.

Ayman al-Khatib, who fled from northern Gaza, said more than 25 members of his family were killed in an airstrike on Jabalia camp. “They asked us for 2,000 shekels, but we don’t have the money,” he said. “We don’t have a tent or anything.”

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said on Friday that the average cost of displacement from Gaza to the south has reached $3,180, noting that fuel is scarce and shelter supplies have been barred from entering for seven months due to the Israeli blockade.

In recent weeks, the Israeli army has intensified its bombardment of high-rises and residential buildings in Gaza City. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the numbers of displaced are rising fast, with some 200,000 displacements recorded from northern to southern Gaza over the past month alone, including 56,000 since Sunday.
