“Our Western colleagues who initiated the so-called snapback - the legitimacy of which we do not recognize - they keep saying that they are open for diplomatic solutions, although they forfeited a diplomatic solution already by initiating an illegal procedure being serial violators of 2231.”

“So, we'll be living in two parallel realities because for some snapback happened, for us it didn't. That creates a problem. How we will get out of it, let's see.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Vasily Nebenzya, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Russian Federation:
“Iran was in intensive consultations with the euro troika, before they came with the draft that passed on Friday. And they were very close to a deal, but then they were told by a certain former participant of the JCPOA, from whom the whole thing started. The first initial original sin was committed by that country, in 2018, if you remember it. They told no, and the Europeans said, yes, sir.”

Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya today (1 Oct) told journalists in New York that Russia does not recognize the legitimacy of triggering the Iran nuclear deal snapback mechanism, and said, “so we'll be living in two parallel realities because for some snapback happened, for us, it didn't.
Last week, the Security Council voted down an effort by China and Russia to extend sanctions relief to Iran for six months under the nuclear deal – formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Nebenzya said, “our Western colleagues who initiated the so-called snapback - the legitimacy of which we do not recognize - they keep saying that they are open for diplomatic solutions, although they forfeited a diplomatic solution already by initiating an illegal procedure.”
He said these countries are “serial violators” of Security Council resolution 2231, which endorsed the JCPOA in 2015.
The Russian Ambassador said, “we are not frankly happy that the Secretary-General rushed to implement the resolution, which has obvious legal flaws.”
He said Iran “was in intensive consultations with the euro troika before they came with the draft that passed on Friday. And they were very close to a deal, but then they were told by a certain former participant of the JCPOA, from whom the whole thing started. The first initial original sin was committed by that country, in 2018, if you remember it. They told no, and the Europeans said, yes, sir.”
The JCPOA was signed by Iran and the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany, together with the European Union.
In 2018 the United States officially withdrew from the JPCOA
The so-called snapback mechanism remains in force which will see sanctions reimposed on Tehran starting today, following the termination of the JCPOA.
