Storyline

The fifth edition of the World Food Forum (WFF) concluded today at FAO headquarters in Rome, marking the end of a week-long event that united leaders, youth, Indigenous Peoples, scientists, farmers, investors, and innovators around one shared goal: transforming agrifood systems for a sustainable, hunger-free world.

In his closing remarks, FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, reiterated that, in its 80th anniversary, FAO reaffirms its “shared mission” of ending “hunger and malnutrition.”

He said, “We marked FAO’s 80th anniversary, celebrating eight decades of service to food and agriculture, and reaffirming our shared mission. A world free from hunger and malnutrition. A future for everyone that is peaceful, sustainable, prosperous and foods-secure.”

In her speech, the First Lady of Brazil, Janja Lula da Silva, praised the “central focus” of youth in the forum.

She said, “The central focus that this forum has placed on young people is not only necessary, but strategic. The sum of knowledge, experiences, and ideas from multiple generations enriches the processes and enhances the results.”

Earlier in the day, actresses and celebrity chefs joined youth activists, influencers and innovators from around the world for a celebration of food, sport and creativity on Junior World Food Day.

The event, moderated by Italian celebrity chef Alessandro Borghese and the American actress and dancer Monique Coleman, was attended by almost 1,000 students aged 9 to 13, who were joined by 80 students from the World Food Forum School Assembly. It opened with a break dance performance, followed by an introductory speech from FAO Director-General QU Dongyu.

This year, the WFF expanded, evolved and accelerated its impact. The week-long event brought together over 6,500 participants in Rome, demonstrating the growing reach and influence of the WFF as a platform for inclusive action.
